Classic Wedding Hairstyles for Your Big Day

Your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life, and in 20 years, you want to look back fondly on this special time. All too often, however, people go with trendy hairdos for their wedding, only to look at pictures a few years down the road and wonder, “what was I thinking?” A classic hairstyle is a good way to ensure you'll never feel a twinge of regret when going over wedding photos, because these styles have stood the test of time, and will always be a good choice for a wedding hairstyle.

1. The Bob

Although the bob has only been around for a little over a hundred years, it has established itself as a classic look for women, making it an ideal choice for your wedding hair. For the big day, you can spruce up the bob with curls, a headband, flowers, or some lace.

2. Braids

There are so many different braids that you can rock for your wedding that it would be impossible to go over them all. Plus, you can do partial braids, side braids, braids combined with other hairstyles, and more. Here are a few of the most popular braids for wedding looks:

  • French

  • Dutch

  • Fishtail

  • Waterfall

  • Lace

3. Low Updo

A low updo is arguably one of the most classic and elegant wedding hairstyles. There are so many things you can do with a low wedding updo, but most often it will involve some braiding, curling, and some sort of bun that the hair is gathered around.

Low updos are ideal for summer weddings, because they get the hair out of your face and away from your neck and shoulders while still maintaining that elegant look. And don’t forget about the slightly more modern take on the low updo, the side updo.

4. The Bun

Don’t worry: this isn't some plain old librarian bun we’re talking about! We’re talking about a wedding bun: it can be high, low, to the side, wrapped with a braid, decorated with flowers, curled, twisted, and so much more. The bun is an extraordinarily versatile updo, and there are a number of ways you can personalize the look while still keeping with the classic wedding feel.

5. Curly Side Pony

You're probably thinking, “a ponytail for my wedding? Not likely!” But just listen: the curly side pony isn't an ordinary ponytail—it’s elegant, classic, fun, versatile, and a look that women have been sporting at their weddings for a long time. The side pony is best when curled, but you can also braid it, intertwine it with floral elements, or even combine it with an awesome fringe.

6. French Twist

Nothing says classic and traditional like the French twist, especially when you combine it with delicate flowers, an heirloom hair pin, or a beautiful barrette. And yes, the French twist can also be combined with curls, braids, and other stylistic elements.

8. Half Up Half Down

This is a great do when you want to keep your hair out of your face but still want to wear it down for your wedding day. This is a fantastic look when you want to add in other elements, such as waterfall braids, knots, floral wreaths, and of course, amazing curls.

Your wedding is coming up and you're at the same time super stressed and super excited, so the last thing you need is to worry about whether you're going to like your wedding hair five years from now. Stick with one of these classic wedding hairstyles and you'll thank yourself on the big day, and later on when you show your kids pictures from the wedding.

Any one of these classic dos will help you look your best for when you walk down the aisle, but don’t forget to customize the style to your tastes and personality to make it your own.
